Las Fallas - Valencia, Spain

Here's a post title that looks familiar. The Fallas of Valencia. For a description of what the event entails and its deeper meanings, refer to our post a year ago on the Fallas. This year, we went for the last day, "la crema," the burning. This is the day when they burn all of the Fallas around the city. We woke up too early and caught a cab to the bus station. We boarded our 7 am bus and fell back asleep. From time to time, we were awoken by the loud British girls sitting in front of us or the overly excited Spanish boys beside us who continually checked their stock of firecrackers and chatted about all the things they couldn't wait to do. We arrived around eleven and piddled around, had a snack, and met our friends who took the 8 am bus. We embarked on our second journey of the Fallas.

     Here is a funny Falla. The 120 is a speed limit sign and it's been crossed out because the gov't recently lowered the speed limit to 110 km/h to try and cut down on gas consumption. Next to it is the Lacoste alligator on a warning sign. It reads "pijos sueltos" which translates as rich people on the loose.

     Each day during the week of Las Fallas, they have a firework show in the main square around 2 pm. They try to break the record of the decibel reading from the previous one. Here's the aftermath.

     Overall, we had a great time but staying up 24 hours straight was tough. We stayed up through the night and into delirium and caught a 6:30 am bus back to Madrid. There we suffered through a wasted Sunday. It was worth it though. The experience of Las Fallas in Valencia was amazing.
